Synopsis
Cook led three famous expeditions to the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1779. In voyages that ranged from the Antarctic circle to the Arctic Sea, Cook charted Australia and the whole coast of New Zealand, and brought back detailed descriptions of the natural history of the Pacific. Accounts based on Cook's journals were issued at the time, but it was not until this century that the original journals were published in Beaglehole's definitive edition. "The Journals" tells the story of these voyages as Cook wanted it to be told, radiating the ambition, courage and skill which enabled him to carry out an unrivalled series of expeditions in dangerous waters.

A really good read for all those interested in the history of the encounter between cultures.I skipped some lengthy parts about navigation. I suppose most readers will ignore the details onthe Endeavour's topographic position and the weather, which captain James Cook of course had to take downat the beginning of every entry.By a list of technical terms, an index about persons and a few maps, the editor provides all the necessary background information for studying James Cook's travels.Utterly recommendable.
...to get a first-hand, in-depths impression how James Cook experienced his 3 voyages around the world. It needs 646 pages with all its repetitive entries about weather, position and sailing manoeuvres to get an idea of the length and monotony of the long see passages. Regarding the stay on land and contact with the natives as well as his relation to the ships-crew it is interesting to see what he considered worth to mention and what he concealed. Useful in this regard are the carefully made short footnotes and comments by the editor. The text is complemented by a detailed glossary, index of persons and places and some maps. Cooks language is surprisingly uncomplicated and also for non-native speakers easy to read.
I would recommend this book for anyone doing research on the voyages of Captain Cook but for general interest a book like Richard Hough's "Captain James Cook" reads more naturally. The Journals of Cook are generally easy to read but do get a bit tedious at times; however, it is fascinating to read Cook's own words. The full journals would need many volumes and this version does a good job providing summaries of sections that have been omitted. I specifically wanted to read Cook's own writing about a specific location and parts were omitted so beware that this may be the case; a necessity given the volume of the works.
